Overview

The fjord systems of Southern Greenland are blessed with some of the most dramatic views the country has to offer – white mountains and green valleys, towering icebergs and landscapes in full bloom. Towns cling to its rocky coastline and vast glaciers slowly carve their way through the mountains. This is the place for a breath-taking adventure. Explore the depths of these fabulous fjords on a 5-day expedition that takes you through the second largest fiord system in the world by boat before hiking to a truly special place – Kangersuneq / the ice fiord! Here the Greenland ice cap meets the bottom of Nuuk fiord and fills it with thousands of years old ice. Hiking these vast landscapes and mountains, wild camping amid the raw ecological beauty whilst listening to the ice carving from the glaciers with a warm cup of coffee, sets the scene for one heck of a journey.

The weather conditions can be harsh & ever-changing while the people are friendly & welcoming; you’ll get an insight into daily life for the indigenous locals and learn about their fascinating culture. Plus, you’ll have the chance to fish and forage in traditional ways and enjoy homecooked meals in some of the most pristine wilderness settings on the planet. Plus you’ll have the  opportunity for some optional extensions of glacial SUP’ing, whale safari’s or coastal kayaking trips.

This is the perfect adventure for those seeking a remote expedition with no paths to follow and epic landscapes to set up camp. Undoubtedly your local guide will take you on a trip of a lifetime in a meaningful way with real connections to the pristine environment and the people that call it home.

Part way up the mountain you’ll stop for lunch and also take in the incredible views. Fully fueled if you’re happy to push on, the summit beckons and rewards you with breath-taking views of the Greenlandic Ice Sheet located around 30km further inland. You’ll also have a birds eye view of the beautiful landscape you will be covering on the following days. All being well you may be lucky to see some wildlife too –  reindeers, ptarmigans or snow hares, foxes and eagles.

Back at the basecamp you have the opportunity to go fishing to catch dinner and/or go foraging to collect some local herbs, mushrooms and berries.

Why go

Exclusively curated itinerary by Adventurous Ewe

Since the COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on local communities and livelihoods across the planet, we’re keen to promote adventures in countries that are actively working towards sustainable tourism and conservation projects. Both culture and nature are very important to sustainable tourism in Greenland. Greenlanders are keen on the transmission of local culture, rather than the protection of it. They overwhelmingly want to teach their culture to tourists rather than just preserve it, and this is part of sustainable tourism for them. Locals speak of the value that Greenlandic traditions have today – and argue that people from elsewhere can learn from them.

We’re particularly keen and passionate to help support the local tourism industry here whilst also giving you the chance to get out and explore the diverse landscapes of this country in a safe and enjoyable manner.

This exclusive adventure has been designed by both a local guiding operator and Adventurous Ewe’s Director, Jim, following a recce trip to Greenland in 2022. Our itinerary aims to deliver an amazing experience and showcase the some of the most stunning and remote landscapes across Greenland whilst also giving you the chance to step out of your comfort zone and gain a greater understanding of the mountains, glaciers, ice-fields, environment, wildlife, culture and local communities.

SEVERE ALLERGIES

If you have a severe allergy please inform us at the time of booking. We will do all we can to help, but unfortunately we are unable to guarantee an allergy free environment on this trip. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as ‘adrenaline auto-injectors’ are not carried as standard by AE leaders and crew. Whilst your leader is aware of our trekkers medical history, please also inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

Safety and well-being

Adventurous Ewe puts the safety and well-being of you, our leaders & crew and the communities we visit at the centre of all our operations, always. Your safety and well-being is our top priority. The Greenland Wilderness Adventure is intentionally challenging and requires individual preparation as the trip is designed to take you out of your every-day comfort zone and achieve something extraordinary. Rest assured we have a thorough Safety Management System, indepth risk assessments and risk management systems in place.

There will be radio or phone contact between Adventurous Ewe Mountain Leader, Local Guide & crew and the Office Base in Nuuk during your trek. Your Mountain Leader will also carry a Satellite phone for emergencies only and have 24-hour contact with Adventurous Ewe office in UK.

If for any reason you need to leave the group early, the crew will assist you with your departure and will arrange transfers, accommodation and medical care if necessary. All costs incurred due to an early departure will need to be covered by yourself before departing Greenland, this is why we insist on suitable travel insurance cover.

Many national governments provide a regularly updated advice service on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check the Foreign & Commonwealth Office Travel advice website for their latest travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all areas your itinerary covers.

We also ask that you please ensure you use your alcohol-based hand sanitiser at all times to minimise the spread of any germs throughout your fellow flock of trekkers!

For more info, please visit our Safety and Well-being page.

Trip grading

This expedition is graded as ‘Tough’, given that you will be trekking and camping in remote areas, but one that is very achievable with the correct preparations and experience.

It requires a good level of strength, endurance, determination and a willingness to chip in and help with camping duties.

The terrain is uneven as there are no designated trails to follow. You will be required to carry all your own kit plus potentially a few extra bits & pieces for camping and food supplies.

Please also be prepared for varied conditions and temps. Due to the unpredictability of the climate in southern Greenland, you will need to be prepared for walking and camping in all conditions, as the weather can change extremely rapidly, making clothing and footwear choices important. Please also note that washing facilities and loos are more or less non-existent on the trek, though please remember that everyone will be experiencing the same conditions and these lack of facilities end up bonding the groups more and creating some great stories.

As with any trek in mountainous and remote areas, safety is paramount and your Leader will always make decisions to amend the itineraries to ensure the safety of the whole group.

Weather

Greenland has an Arctic climate with average temperatures that do not exceed 10°C in the warmest summer months.  However, the conditions in the coastal regions of the Arctic during the northern summer are both mild and changeable. Enjoyable sunny days can swiftly change to cold, windy storms with snow flurries and rolling seas. Average daily temperatures in mid-season are between -4°C and +2°C; however, wind conditions can make it seem colder. It is common that you will experience daytime temperatures below freezing.

Training

A Trek Training Programme will be provided when you join this trip to help you with your preparations. We also have exclusive offers with our Training Partners and Communities – Her Spirit and Strength & Movement Coast, Peter Lant. For more info, please visit our Training & Preparation page.

The more you are prepared, the more you will enjoy the challenge.

Our motto is: Train hard, smile harder and enjoy the journey!

Food & drinks

All breakfasts, 4 lunches and 4 dinners included

At Adventurous Ewe we make a special effort to source our food on Greenland itself and your Local Guide will buy much of what you eat at small local stores. The variety of foodstuffs available in Greenland is necessarily limited. The emphasis is on easily-prepared meals whilst on expedition. Your Local Guide will prepare your evening meals at the overnight camps however he or she will appreciate the help of group members – preparing vegetables, serving the food and washing up, for example. There will be the opportunity to forage for fresh herbs, mushrooms and berries to accompany meals or even catch an Arctic char for dinner with the support and guidance of your Local Guide. Evening meals will consist of 2 – 3 courses, usually a soup to start, a simple main and some cake for dessert. Breakfasts will consist of porridge, muesli, bread, jam and other preserves, plus tea and coffee. At breakfast, snack items and sandwich materials will be made available so that you can make up your own packed lunches. You may want to bring some of your own favourite snacks from home to supplement this.

Drinking Water

Staying hydrated is important when undertaking any physical activity but particularly so at altitude where it is generally recommended to drink at least 2-3 litres per person per day. Drinking water will be provided on the trek but you need to treat it with purification tablets or another form of treatment.

Handheld UV filters such as a ‘SteriPEN’ are very effective, can treat 1 litre of water in a couple of minutes and the water is ready immediately – look for lightweight lithium battery models and remember that you will need to bring a wide-mouthed bottle (e.g. Nalgene) for use with these devices.

Adventurous Ewe has partnered with Water-to-Go, a filtration system that eliminates over 99.99% of all microbiological contaminants from any non-salt water source – for more info please click here. Adventurous Ewe trekkers will receive a free Water-to-Go bottle when departing for our Greenland Wilderness Adventure, and better still, 15% of the purchase value for replacement filters will be donated to our environmental charity partner, Cool Earth. Please note that if the water freezes it will clog up the filter – in this event, defrost before use by sitting the filter in lukewarm water for 10-15 minutes. Please help us reduce the volume of single use plastic in this pristine environment. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.
